How to Treat Your Interns Right
"These companies are definitely taking advantage of the economy to exploit interns. Really, it's a shame, because they're cutting off their own noses to spite their faces--if they chose to add value to the internships they would, in turn, cultivate employees with the experience to add value back to their companies. What do you think?"5 Etiquette Tips to Follow in Business
"Hi Kimberly, Obviously some of this advice (maintaining eye contact, for example) applies pretty much to non-digital interaction. I think an important subtext to all of this is that non-digital interaction is certainly a good idea whenever possible. It may be harder and harder in our increasingly global marketplace, but personal interaction is still what the best business is based on. "Top Time Management Tips
"Great post! Although it's a lot of advice to digest. It's a very systematic approach, however I wonder what success one might have if other variables that cannot be readily controlled are introduced into the equation, such as family obligations. Historically, men have been able to stick to such approaches because women have afforded them the time to do so. I think some career women still find such an approach difficult, because they are divided in obligation, where men usually are not."Collaboration--Now More Critical Than Ever
"I was under the impression that a systems or business analyst would liaise with clients to "sell" rather than just a sales person. Or, is it that salespeople work with the analysts or other IT people to explain solutions to potential clients? Would like to know more."Focusing On Your Passion in Your Business
"There are, however, certain creative passions like music, for one, where spending time doing the business parts of it take away drastically from the time one needs for the creative side. It actually makes your passion a chore, because you dread the non-creative side, yet have to work at it even harder. Then, of course, the art/music suffers. I think it's better to build a business on one of your lesser passions, or one not so artistic. Either that, or surround yourself with others to do the business side. "I think research and metrics are the most important part of that formula, however I think a lot of people don't put the time necessary into considering what they're trying to measure and how. If they don't know, then research is necessary, and that takes time and for some, the wind out of their sails. Do you agree or not? "Video Conferencing – Good Alternative for Conferences?
"I definitely agree that video conferencing is the next best thing to live on stage. Unfortunately, not all of us are photogenic. Another drawback is that if the conference is recorded, as many are, mistakes become preserved for all history. How do you avoid unfortunate stumbles during a video conference? I'd love to hear some pointers."New Traditionalist – Using Pinterest as a Part of the Hiring Process
"Interesting. At first I thought the post would be more about this company analyzing the Pinterest boards of prospective employees, a thing I'm not sure is all to fantastic. I was glad to see it was the reverse. Although, it should be able to work that way too, don't you think? But people would have to be very careful about what they pinned, and I'm not sure the images chosen would really speak to the skills of the employee...although maybe something superficial would be possible. What If Your Franchisor Goes Under?
"This is an eventuality most people probably don't think about when buying a franchise but definitely should. Just like a business you start from scratch, a franchiser can certainly go under. Hopefully you've minimized the odds of this happening by really doing your homework and picking a good franchise going in, but, of course, even if you have there are no guarantees."
