Tiny Bites of Differentiation, Feeding the Business Body and Soul
"Appetizers are definitely great, Judy, but I also love the dessert tables at a buffet (also mentioned). I would "take great delight in the smallest morsels" more often if I didn't have so many TV dinners (though it may increase my appreciation when I do get a good meal). businessavante"Pippas Web DIY SEO: Don't Sell Yourself Short - You ARE Clever.
"I agree, Pippa. I've had a window into the entrepreneurial mind for slightly less than 8 months now on BizSugar - it's a new world to me, completely foreign to where I'm coming from. It can at times be intimidating or depressing realizing what I don't know, what I haven't thought of, the positive mindset & risk-taking so essential for success, etc. Coming from a background of lifelong depression, a penchant for zero risk-taking, and zero ambition (which I consider both good And bad) places me squarely in the "not entrepreneurial" category (which sometimes makes me laugh when I see articles that everyone is or can be an entrepreneur). I've learned a lot about what drives business-minded people by reading 1000s of blogs, though. One thing's sure - it's hard work. businessavante"Leadership Lens
"Very good article, Anna. I agree with your points that the boss shouldn't have a preconceived notion about call-offs, and with the 3 comments so far, so I'll take a different tack. From my perspective as an employee (including over the years both family owned/fresh-house, and franchise/commissary truck types of restaurants) w/near perfect attendance, it's really frustrating when a co-worker is passive-aggressive & repeatedly calls off. The rest of the crew has to do their work (closing, for example - meaning cleaning the place up), while they're partying. In one instance, I was called-in for a few hours on a busy Friday night (due to High School football games) to help out during the rush. The youngster who was supposed to close stumbles in & says he's "too hung-over to work". He goes home & I close on my day off. Did that affect his employment in any way - NO. There was no retribution what-so-ever. It was sluffed off as "tuff luck Bozo..." (I'm Bozo). businessavante "The Three Kinds of Experts On The Internet
"Good call, Bryan. I'd divide group 3 into those that are fairly gifted at BS'ing - those that might fool some people who don't already know the field, and the ones that are so obviously fake that it's either amusing or annoying to read them (depending on my mood at the time). businessavante "The P-51 Mustang: Business Lessons from the Legendary Fighter-Plane That Helped Win WWII!
"Interesting analogy Yoni - one of my favorite subjects, too (read over 200 books on 20thC weapons & warfare '80-'84). From memory I know that the top pic is a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a P-51D Mustang (w/the bubble canopy), the middle pic (incorrectly labeled by whoever supplied it) is a Consolidated B-24 Liberator (built in more #'s than any US plane in history, with a bigger bomb load, longer range, & more speed than the vaunted B-17), and the bottom pic is indeed a P-51B w/the "razor back" (no bubble canopy) and the RR Merlin engine that turned a sub-par plane into one of the best in WWII. The Mustang had Great aerodynamics, but w/the crappy US Allison V-1710 engine it sucked at altitude. The only plane w/the Allison that didn't suck was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning twin-boom fighter - because it had 2 trashcan-sized turbos in the tail booms that glowed orange at night. In the ETO, it was actually the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt (called the Jug by its pilots) that carried the brunt of the war. Before drop tanks, no plane could make it deep enough to escort the bombers. businessavante (Duncan)"Subscribe

"Thanks for the laffs! Comedy can indeed make people think - especially if it isn't preachy or high-handed (it's best when when it sneaks up behind you w/an idea or view you've never thought of, then makes you larf yer arse off). businessavante "
