Was my writing stolen?
"Though it can certainly be disheartening and discouraging (to say the least) to realize that your work has been stolen, it's an expected and to a certain extent unavoidable part of writing online. As a writer/blogger myself, I think it's important to take any safe gaurds, such as signing up for a copywrite service and contacting any people or authoritative sites that have used your content without permission. But at the same time, as hard as it is, you have to let go a bit. As long as there will be writers on the Internet, there will be people who will try to capitalize on other people's hardwork. "Great series, Jackie. For anyone out there debating whether or not to hire a marketing consultant, just read these posts... It takes *a lot* of work to develope and position a product correctly, and business owners can easily make costly mistakes if they don't know what they are doing. Adam"Watching the Competition Will Suck You Dry
"Jackie, I wish every small business owner would read this post! While it's true that business owners should be aware of the competitive field in their respective markets, obsessively watching what the business down the street is doing will not only take away valuable time, energy, and resources, but it can litterally "gut out" a business. And it happens all the time, especially these days when businesses are working so hard to catch consumers' attention, and when they can "so easily" do it via their web and social media presence. To achieve real growth (and stability) a business (like a person) must focus on what's happening on the inside. Adam"I am Confused About Marketing
"Hi Susan, Vert important point. I think some of the confusion for small business owners is stemming from the fact that so much emphasis is being placed on having a social presence in particular. It's being touted by many business and marketing experts as a do or die tactic. These business owners are pouring an inordinant amount of time, energy, and money thinking it will be the holy grail that will save their businesses. But often, if these tactics are disconnected from proper business management, development, and where appropiate, innovation then it only makes matters worse. Marketing tactics of any kind will typically be successful if the product/service is unique/extraordinary and basic marketing skills and knowledge exist *or* the marketing tactics are either so on target or so unique that they can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. In both cases, however, businesses owners *still* need to be in touch with the realities of their product/service as well as their target market(s). Adam"Groupon’s first ever car deal was a flop
"I saw the orignal article earlier this week. Aside from all the reasons provided as to why the deal flopped, the biggest factor is that the big ticket purchses are totally not suited to Groupon's model. Most of Groupon's customers may not actually be looking for the deals they opt into. For many, the draw could be in the feeling that they are getting a good deal, and that feeling alone is worth the purchase *even* if they don't cash in on it. With big ticket items, people would have to already be in the market (or at least considering it) to opt in. Perhaps a better model: a site where those who are wavering on some significant purchases, could band together and receive a significant discount for agreeing to make the purchase within a given time frame. 6 Reasons It Pays To Use Your Real Identity As a Business Blogger
"Yoni, I don't know what was crazier: messing with a truck driver or actually showing up at the specified time and place... And in defense of those who have chosen a pen name... there *are* many valid reasons for not revealing one's identity, such as that one may be using that wall of anonymity to say things that he or she may not be able to say otherwise because of the possible backlash. In any case, I think it really depends on the blogger's needs and goals. Adam"
