Why Every Small Business Owner Is A Salesman And Why So Many Fail At It
"Yoni, Re: "firstly..." That's a pain. I hope it *is* "resolved" and "shortly." Re: "secondly..." There is an unavoidable fact which applies even to big corporations: resources such as time, money, personnel, etc are limited. Since most people are in business in make money, it makes sense that they direct the majority of these resources to those people/ projects that will offer the greatest return. The other fact is that in business, some types of companies will have a very small and specfic market niche. For example: A pet beauty salon service will only be able to market their services to those who 1. have pets, and 2. Are willing and able to spend money on such a service. While a repairman, house painter, etc will have a broader customer base. That said, for those business types that can market their product/ services to a broad group, then it may pay to target many, somewhat potential customers in the hopes of netting them- whether now or in the future. It really depends on the business, the available resources, and the methods of marketing used. And re: #3... Israeli customer service is not American customer service. For the most part, in America "The customer is always right," and there is a focus on providing a good customer experience. While for the most part in Israel, it's more like "You have the privilage of shopping in *my* store." It's a cultural thing, that native Israelis are used to, or at least it doesn't bother them enough to change it. It's all part of the "hardness" of life in Israel. "Rochelle, I'm way past my college days, but I can certainly feel the anxiety around me... I can only imagine how unsettling it must be to be entering the working world given the current climate. But, from my own experiences I can say that just about *everyone* has "big breaks" or moments when things suddenly open up in their lives... but realize these moments will be specific to you and your story. And it may even be that a change can come your way- even a small one- and you may not even realize that *it* is the big break- only in hindsight will you see it.. Bottom line: work honestly, do your best, and see what life throws your way. Good luck! Adam Gottlieb "Bin Laden News - How Some are REALLY Feeling
"I also agree, and I went through a similar experience after hearing the news-at first there was elation followed by apathy. You're certainly not alone... I think there are a few reasons for this: -Even though the wounds of the terror attacks run deep, especially for those who were directly involved, several years have gone by since the bombings, and the reality is time changes things- especially for those who *weren't* directly involved. -Bin Laden has not been active with Al Queda for several years now, while terror attempts have continued. His death certainly won't make us safer. -We've just got too many big problems to worry about in America to be happy that justice was done for very long."Hitler Finds Out About Blogging [VIDEO]
"Very sad lack of sensitivity- not only for the blogger who made and posted this video, but also for BizSugar, since as many have already pointed out there is basically no business value to specifically using Hitler (Y'mach Shemo)as the conduit for an inconsequential and obscure message about blogging. And Anita, with all due respect, I understand the delicate balance between censorship and moderation, especially for a aggregation site such as this, but sometimes what's needed is a little common sense: where a post is so deeply offending so many people while providing no real value in return, then *even* from the standpoint of running a professional, reputable site, you should have removed it. "Yoni, *Everyone* makes mistakes, but *not* everyone wants to admit it. But like Rivkah's quote (it's a very good one by the way), it's in those very mistakes that the biggest profits lie. If you never would have initially resisted maintaining a blog, for example, you would be less motivated and appreciative of it now. And yeah, you're probably going to have to give in on the cellphone standoff... Why are you "petrified by technology"? Adam"A Business Diatribe: My Problem with the Fitness Industry (How It Puts Us In Mortal Danger Every Day!)
"Hi Yoni, Interesting post... I never thought about it that way. But I think the idea about providing the equipment is that these men can have some kind of release for their pent up agressions, anger, etc... better they "take it out" on the equipment then on each other and the prision staff. Sometimes there's value to a product/service that may not be immediately apparent to those who don't use it, or who use it under different conditions. It's the job of the seller/business owner to convey that value to the appropiate people on the outside. Adam"7 Practical Ways to Save on Gas in Your Small Business
"Yeah, we're really spoiled in America... I just checked the numbers: throughout much of Europe, the average price of gas is around $8 per gallon... but it doesn't take into account how much money that is compared to the average income. 24 Shekels per gallon seems high. At least it's a small country, you can only drive so far ;) Adam"A Business, Branding and Marketing Lesson from Legendary Rockers ZZ Top! (The Power of a Business Beard!)
"Great post, Yoni. It also helps that you stay true to your image. I remember hearing that in the mid 80's, both Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill were offered a million dollars by the razor company Gilette to shave off their beards for an ad campaign. But they refused the offer... Adam"Are Free and Hope Your Marketing Strategies?
"Very important article Susan, I think there is a big misconception among smaller companies and solopreneurs in particular that they have to do(or offer)a lot of pro bono work in order to a) be competitive and b) create a perception of value among customers. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, when done incorrectly, offering too much for free can hurt both one's business and it's image. Adam"Subscribe
Why Every Small Business Owner Is A Salesman And Why So Many Fail At It
"Niall, I agree, many small business owners are not natural salesmen (or sales women); and they don't have to be- they can hire another to do that job. But at the same time, small business owners are also ambassadors for their business- by default. If they don't believe in the value of the product or service that they are providing, then why should anyone else? And irregardless of natural sales ability, every small business owner should do what he or she can to be in touch with the needs/attitudes of his/her customers, employees, and business partners and try to put his/her best foot forward. It's just common sense, but many miss it. Thanks for the comment. Adam "
