Social Media Phony Following Twits
"Hi Rick, I'm glad you wrote this post because I was just wondering the same thing... I've gotten several of these followers over the past month or so and was amazed to see how many followers *they* had- many more than me ;) Personally, I don't follow someone back unless there's a real-looking picture,a listed, non-spammy website, some tweet activity, and... the person actually looks like someone I would want to follow. "Great post and topic, Tina. I think the universal theme that ties together all the factors mentioned (cost, time, expertise, perspective, etc) is personalization. There may be plenty of information out there, and some of it may be highly valuable, but at the same time it's impersonal. When there is a person and more importantly a relationship (ie the customer-client one), behind the information then it gives it true value. "Yoni, Yeah, there's nothing like reaching into your pocket, finding a hardened wad of paper mulch, and then experiencing that sinking feeling when you realize what that wad *used* to be... I've done it plenty of times ;) You should know that there are some really good, free, and easy-to-use accounting programs that you could download on to your computer which could help you keep track of how much you're making, who owes you what, and their contact info. Two options: turbocash.com and gnucash.com. It's a good start. Adam"Lessons on Building a Business Portfolio and Expertise from 18th Century Corpse-Stealing Physicians and Anatomists!
" It just goes to show that if a person really, really wants something- whether it's knowledge, business development, money, etc- they'll get it in the end. Can't say I agree with his tactics, though. I guess it was a different time... Adam"Experts Are Everywhere, Who Do You Choose?
"Hi Jackie, Great post and topic... The truth is that what's happening online is just an extension of what happens off-line. There will always be people who can put on an Academy Award winning act in order to swindle, cheat, and decieve, and then disappear into thin air. The Internet just makes these things a little easier to do... In end, all we're really left with is our gut feeling. If a site, an "expert", or a person's message feels off, then that's a sign that we should be clicking our way out of there. Adam "Take Yourself Out of The Marketing Decision Game
"Hi Susan, Your post really highlights the need for small business owners to get feedback- whether it's from a mentor, employees, customers, or a hired professional, since, like you said, it's very hard for a person to not see things through his or her own preferences. Great post. Adam"12 Low-Cost Tips to Make Your Small Business Look Like a Big Time Enterprise
"Yoni, Nice imagary... I would add that you can't even tell that all those feathers are a thing of beauty when they're down. It only becomes beautiful when it's presented so that others can see it... I think it all really boils down to believing in the value of what you have to offer (professionally and personally) and then using whatever tools you have at your disposal to give this value over to other people. "The About page is definitely a good place start as well as LinkedIn. Someone offering professional services and/or products should be upfront about his or his educational and professional background. If the person is vague in these areas, then it's usually a good idea to stay away, unless several of the other factors I mentioned are in place. Thanks fot the comment, Susan. Adam"
