Working with Japan - Let’s have lunch
"Really neat article. I find it interesting, but all of these articles seem to highlight the homogeneity of the Japanese. The more I read about them through these posts, the more I see them as a unified people, which in a way is a little off-putting. I like to think of people as totally individual, not part of a group whose actions and tastes are so readily predicted. Still, I can appreciate the differences in business and social behavior and perhaps learn from them. Strange, but interesting. Thanks for another great post!"Using a Car for Business? Deduct It!
"Yes, but doesn't a self-employed person run the risk of an audit by deducting their car, no matter how well they keep records of its use? A good friend that does taxes told me that this type of deduction can act as a trigger for an audit, especially if one hasn't been doing it since the beginning of owning the car. What do you think?"What Is a Copywriter? Depends On Who You Ask (infographic)
"Good infographic, but I'm not sure about the image for the last one--what you really do. What is the person supposed to represent visually? Is it just a modern female-for-the-future kind of thing? I'm just wondering what you were trying to capture when you chose the pic. I'm glad you posted this, though. I think it gives everyone a moment of relativity--how friends, family, etc. can perceive one's work. Thanks for the post!"Watch Out: These Industries are Dying Out Fast
"'Tis all too true, and I know it first hand as I watched my husband bail on the print newspaper industry just before the writing was on the wall, and luckily he acquired a new skill set and reinvented his career. Not all of those employed in these dying fields are lucky or proactive enough to do this--and they really need to, NOW! Interesting post, Miranda."How to Deal With Negativity in the Blogosphere
"It's been my experience that you cannot avoid negativity by some customers and netizens, no matter how great your customer service actually is. Because hey, there are crazies out there who, emboldened by the anonymity and distance of the internet, will just say anything very publicly. The best way is to deal with them with aplomb--be above board in everything, and respond right away, personally. I think your advice is sound. Thanks for the great submission."What You Need to Know BEFORE Hiring College Students
"Good advice when considering hiring younger recent grads, but I think adult students need to be evaluated on different criteria, like what work or activities they were doing while enrolled, and why they chose to study later on, etc. However, it's important to not be age-ist either way."Brands Are Created By Visionaries, Destroyed By Caretakers. What Are You?
"Hi Gary--I think it's true that many brands, dying and otherwise, could use a visionary to lead the way. However, I wonder, there are many brands that have less visible leaders at the helm, with organizational vision provided by teams rather than one dynamic (cult, haha) leader (Apple), and these companies chug happily along. Apparently not all brands need a single visionary. Speaking of Apple, we'll see whether it goes into rapid decline now that its visionary is gone. I am not an Apple fan. Steve was okay, but his products are elitist in my view. Anyway, the post got me thinking, so it's obviously a good one! ~Heather"How will the Olympics Benefit Sponsors and the UK
"I'm surprised that England still has laws in place restricting business hours on Sundays. The US had "blue laws" many years ago, which sought to enforce religious standards of worship times, etc. however these were repealed. I think with the economy in such a state, it might be a good idea to remove these restrictions. Also, allowing Sunday hours would provide jobs for people who don't mind working those days, and so not impinge on other workers' rights. Surely legislation could be formed to allow workers to opt in or out of Sunday hours? There could be so much more to talk about here. I'd love to get a dialog going about the subject of the UK economy, but I'm afraid it might be too much of a hot button issue. For now, this post has provided food for thought, so thanks for the submission!"Subscribe
Should I invest time on Pinterest? Is this going to last?
"Pinterest is okay...I'm not decided on it yet, for myself. I think the most salient point (out of the many in your article) is that it's a good idea to focus on where your audience actually is, and not jump onto the next new thing, trying to be everywhere at once. But I'm an inquisitive sort, so I'd temper that advice with allowing a couple of hours a week to experiment with some of the new social media, just for S&G. You never know where it might take you! Thanks for the great post! "
