The Pitfalls of Social Media: Why Something So Good for Business Can Suck So Bad!
"Alas Yoni, In the end, social media is just that...social. And this, of course, comes with all the positives and negatives the word implies. My experience has been that business is no different. I've had family members in business in very small towns in eastern Pennsylvania, a location I know you are very familiar with, who were always mindful of their social standing and reputation when doing business. On the other hand, I have friends who cannot comprehend Facebook because they lack the understanding of the difference between intimate and casual social boundaries that a public social Website requires. In the end, there is another matter you have not mentioned. We are often judged online as in life by the company we keep. So linking to someone just to return a favor can have far greater impact on your reputation overall in terms of those who respect your judgment. For this reason, as I know many others have said before me, it's probably a bad idea to exchange links as an obligation (except on some occasions) or to be too pressured by what others say. The business people I have known who worried too much about what their neighbors said found it difficult to grow beyond their tiny market, and online, if pleasing one clique confines your business and impacts the judgment of a broader potential community, how is it really helpful to your business or brand? "Crosby, Stills, Nash & A Business Speech: The Business Definition of “Live in Concert” (Music Video and Article)
"Sorry about the problem with your post, Yoni. Speaking for the entire BizSugar team, I'm sure it was an accident. I sent you a followup e-mail on this and would suggest anytime any members has a similar problem that they contact us and we will look into it."Hire a Business Writer, Shed Unwanted Pounds, Kick Depression and Quit Smoking NOW!
"For a minute I thought the "kick depression" part had to do with a play on words about the economy. Actually, something about the title reminds me of the Tom Waits song "Step Right Up": "That's right, it fillets, it chops, it dices, slices, Never stops, lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn..." I think many entrepreneurs are afraid of explaining what their product really does. There's a huge difference between hype and being passionate about your business. You must believe what you do is significant. Tell others about it...or get into another business."Could Google, Verizon Deal Threaten Small Business?
"It's a thorny issue to be sure. While the notion of any government regulation over the Internet raises obvious censorship concerns, maintaining a level playing field where broadband is concerned is definitely a worthy goal and one good for small business."6 Charts That Suggest The Unemployment Crisis Is WORSE Than It Looks!
"As the numbers show, what's needed is a ground swell of new entrepreneurial activity. Existing companies, even those slowly recovering, will never be able to reabsorb the huge number of unemployed. And, of course, as Duncan points out, the existing numbers probably don't include "discouraged workers" who have fallen off the unemployment rolls and have given up on finding work. Obviously temporary hires of census workers should not be considered in any kind of recovery trend. "5 Lessons in Business Success from the Master of Improvisation Himself: MacGyver! (Business Article & Video)
"Ah, MacGyver! The memories come flooding back. Actually, I never watched it but it seems like every other kid in my high school did and talked about the show incessantly. But, of course, they had to listen to me yammer on about Star Wars, Star Trek (which wasn't even from the same era) and Battlestar Galactica (which was already in re-runs) day in and day out so I guess eveything evens out in the end. Great post, Yoni, and thanks for sharing."Sales Tip A Day: Using a Checklist as Part of Your Sales Process
"Chris, I hate checklists but I see their value. So many people fail to implement a strategy fully in every aspect of their business then wonder why things aren't working out. The danger is getting into too much of a routine. When changes in the market occur you will need to change your strategy AND your checklist. What worked yesterday may not work next year or even next week, so be prepared...but also be organized with a checklist."5 Tools To Manage Social Media For Franchises
"Joel, I guess the question I have is whether these efforts are likely to be implemented from the corporate brand level or from individual franchises. Also I'm wondering why the need for special social media managing tools for franchises as opposed to the ones every other small business is using. Lastly, when I hear people talk about hundreds or thousands of social media outposts, it REALLY makes me nervous. This is probably too much to manage even for a huge corporation and it strikes me that franchise owners would be better off localizing and simplifying their social media efforts anyway. Let whoever is working the drive through window or the front register Twitter about experiences during the day or people they meet. Keep things simple. It's too much to ask from big corporations, right?"Subscribe
Little League Baseball, Votes, Social Media and Not Keeping Score
"Yoni, CIK Marketing, Entrepreneurosaurus, Businessavante, Couldn't have said any of this better myself. I think sometimes people vote for the BizSugar posts for similar reasons. The social aspects of social media are so important, but just as in anything else, it shouldn't turn into an obligation. Yes, CIK and Entrepreneurosaurus, there are winners and losers in real life. But relationships are not about winning and losing. The proper give and take makes you the winner every time."
